Resumen:

Estrogens have diverse actions in different organs, and their biological effects are mediated mainly by the Estrogen Receptor (ER) a and ß. In some organs, besides the female reproductive tract, ER has specific effects modulating its physiological actions. In some cases, special isoforms for these receptors have been described for these organs, and their alterations are involved in specific entities, this is the case of the lung in which lymphangioleiomyomatosis, allergic pneumonitis, and recently lung cancer are related with ER action. In this chapter we will describe the distribution and the action of ER in the lung, and its relevance in some respiratory diseases. This review is relevant since the changes in the treatment of some of these entities could modify the prognosis and clinical evolution of the female affected patients. © 2012 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
