Resumen:

Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) presently represent a major problem in public health, being associated with an increasing number of immunocompromised patients and the widespread use of medical devices. The diagnosis and treatment of these infections remain difficult and are usually inefficient. As a result, the search for novel diagnostic methods has been considered a proritary task during the last few years. The identification of fungal cell-wall proteins useful for the diagnosis of IFIs appears to be a promising approach. These new diagnostic techniques are currently in the experimental stage and are not routinely available at most centres for patient care. The hope is that with earlier diagnosis of IFIs, the associated mortality will be reduced. In this chapter we review recent literature on the use of antigens present in the cell surface of pathogenic fungi, as an approach for the rapid detection of IFIs compared to other diagnostic methods. © 2013 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
