Resumen:

Solar disinfection of drinking water is an inexpensive alternative easily applied in rural communities. Treatment can be carried out using transparent plastic bottles. When soar radiation is low and/or exposure time to sunlight is short, disinfection may be enhanced using solar concentrators with angled reflective panels over which transparent plastic bottles can be placed The used water during the experiments of this study came from a water treatment facility effluent stream and tap water inoculated with polio virus. The efficiency analysis showed that an easy to operate concentrator buill from low-cost materials can remove 105 total coliforms (measured as Most Probable Number/100 ml) and 106 Plaque Forming Units, after a four-hour exposure during the most intense solar radiation of sunny days, which may reach accumulative values of 3000 W-h/m2.
