Resumen:

There is a worldwide tendency of students to choose administrative, social, and health careers, neglecting science and mathematics. These preferences have at their root a diverse set of factors; among them are the lack of training programs for science teachers, wrong methods of popularizing science among young students, and the lack of student motivation to pursue a scientific career. Although efforts such as science fairs, science museums, hands-on experiments, etc. were created to draw the interest of young students to science, none have accomplished the goals for which they were created and only meagre results have been obtained. We describe three main strategies directed at increasing the interest of students in science; these strategies have been applied in high schools in Mexico City over the last five years. Although no quantitative data have been obtained nor has an indicator been constructed for the proper assessment of these programs, our experience and the enthusiastic participation of students and teachers show that, if implemented on a regular basis, they can contribute to increasing the interest of Mexican students in science. Our aim is to convince academic authorities and key stakeholders to support projects and programs that can encourage the enrolment of students in scientific careers. The strategies described present science to young students as an option for a professional career, thus increasing the number of students in national science programs. © 2016 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
