Resumen:

Biological diversity is not homogeneously distributed around the globe. Notably, species diversity decreases with latitude. Superimposed on this and other natural trends of spatial variation is the heterogeneous distribution of diversity among nations. Geopolitical entities in which biodiversity is, in relative terms, particularly overrepresented, constitute the biodiversity-rich countries elite. Obviously biodiversity does not follow the artificial boundaries of countries. However, as described here, nations with unusual concentrations of biodiversity do exist, face particular biodiversity threats, and have ecological, historical, social, and economic structures that must be taken into account in any attempt to view, value, and conserve global biodiversity. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.
