The employment of new technologies that involve process conditions not
presently used on a commercial level or still under research, such as
hydrogen production with thermochemical cycles such as the
Sulphur-Iodine (SI) cycle emphasizes the importance of reliable
emergency systems. Thus, the use of Probabilistic Safety Analysis (PSA)
can be extended to the chemical industry to evaluate which factors
affect the unavailability or unreliability of these systems and thus
have a way to quantify the impact of adding or modifying their design.
Additionally, the use of Fault Tree and Event Tree Analysis provides
information about the components that contribute most to the
unreliability of the systems. In this paper we present the evaluation of
some proposals to decrease the frequency of occurrence of accident
sequences initiated by uncontrolled leaks in a plant that is still in
the design phase.
