Resumen:

Worldwide, the importance of local or community participation in decision-making regarding natural resource management for sustainable rural development and biodiversity conservation is increasingly recognized. The concept of participation and its meaning, however, is a contested topic among researchers, policymakers, planners, and stakeholders. Two main approaches stand out: normative and political. In this chapter, we discuss the methodological implications of both approaches by reviewing evidence from research on participation in protected area management and conservation. We also propose a multi-methodological approach for examining participation that describes and analyzes political interactions and power relationships among actors at different decision-making levels. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.
