Resumen:

During the past years the development and use of technologies for hydroprocessing of heavy oils has been slow because of the availability of light sweet crudes, mainly from the Middle East, Nigeria, and the North Sea. Additionally, the small price differential between light and heavy oils has oriented refiners to the use of feedstocks based on light oils or mixtures with a high light/heavy oil ratio. Refining companies have been under pressure to achieve a short payback period for investment, so funds have been used, where this can be achieved, in the upstream processing of oil. However, the world?s reserves of sweet crude oil resources are expected to decline. At the same time, an increasing proportion of the oil reserves in some producing countries is of heavy crudes, which contain a lower amount of distillates and more residues. So, it is foreseen that in the future, some refineries will increasingly replace light crudes with heavier oils, like those produced today in countries like Venezuela and Mexico. © 2007 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
