Resumen:

During the 1980s a number of economic and sociopolitical factors at both the international and domestic levels combined to introduce profound changes in the structure, physiognomy, and politics of Latin America?s working class. The more important of these factors were the economic crisis triggered in August 1982 by the so-called foreign debt crisis; the restructuring of the international capitalist system; changes in the techniques of production, in financial and trade networks, as well as in labor processes; and the macroeconomic adjustment policies implemented by the Latin American governments in order to confront the economic crisis and adapt to changes in the international economy. These and related factors led to a drastic reconfiguration of the economy, the labor market, and state institutions in all the Latin American states. They also changed class relations and produced huge surplus transfers from the domestic to the international market and, within each national society, from the lower- and middle-income groups to the higher-income ones. Moreover, the existing patterns of wealth and power concentration increased in most countries, contributing to greater social inequality. © 1995 Taylor & Francis. All rights reserved.
