Resumen:

In Mexico, the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) has not received much attention when it comes to improving energy efficiency, due to lack of information, great heterogeneity of the SMEs, limited resources and lower priority given to energy issues. This paper presents the findings from a statistical data review in order to obtain information about the Mexican SMEs principal industrial sectors, attending to its energy consumption by region and its energy improvement potential as well. Additionally it will provide identification and an analysis of the most relevant barriers to energy efficiency derived of energy audits carried out in 40 SMEs in several regions in Mexico. Characteristic energy efficiency indicators are determined for each company while an auditing approach has been developed, focusing on modelling the energy consumption of individual SMEs, dividing the processes according to horizontal technologies and attributing annual consumption to these technologies, from measurements or by calculation. Principal results of the audits show the needs for the capacity building, information and awareness raising. © 2018 University of Minho. All rights reserved.
