Resumen:

The genera Rhyncholampas A. Agassiz, 1869 and Cassidulus Lamarck, 1801 (Family Cassidulidae), have been involved in recurrent taxonomic problems, they have been placed in different genera, as synonymies or even under different names (Corystus, Lovenilampas, Plagiopygus, Pleuropygus, Procassidulus, Pygorhynchus, Rhynchopygus). Actually they are recognized as different genera, with Rhyncholampas pacificus (A. Agassiz, 1863) and Cassidulus caribaearum Lamarck, 1801 as type species of each genus, respectively. The morphometric differences between both species are minimal making very difficult for the phylogeny (based on morphology) to asses an accurate relation. A review of the nomenclatural problems of both genera is presented. Morphometrics, DNA analysis (mitochondrial DNA, 16S), gonadal histology and ecology of R. pacificus and C. caribaearum will be used to probe a hypothesis of a heterochrony event between this species. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group.
