Resumen:

In this chapter, Luis Villoro indicts liberal representative democracy because of its individualism and suggests two other concepts of democracy derived from non-Western traditions. The first is ?community-based democracy, " practiced by the Indigenous peoples of the contemporary Zapatista movement, and the other, conceived by Kwasi Wiredu, is called ?consensual democracy.? Villoro then asks if these types of democracy are truly viable in complex modern societies due to the fact that these alternatives have been implemented primarily in traditional societies. Tracing similarities between community-based and consensual democracies and the republican tradition, Villoro suggests a way to redraw republicanism to include the principles of traditional forms of community democracy. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.
