Resumen:

Sex-related differences in both physiological and pathological aspects of human health have been extensively studied and are mostly related to sex hormones. Blood and tissue concentration of androgens vary greatly during a lifetime and influence health and well-being in many ways, including the regulation of immune cells and their interaction with target organs. In general, women show a propensity to develop chronic pain and autoimmune disorders and, interestingly, adult asthmatic females suffer more severe and frequent crisis than men in the same age span. Seemingly, males immune system and inflammation responses differ from women's, sensibly impacting the gravity of this chronic inflammatory disease. Because of these notable discrepancies between genders, many therapeutic tools have been analyzed in terms of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, revealing differences in their efficacy and side effects. The evident gender differences in asthma development and severity, point out the need to create gender-specific treatments. Notwithstanding, research in this area is scant and, therefore, discussion of the available conceptual and experimental data is fundamental. Herein, we intend to review recently published literature regarding novel asthma treatments carried out in carefully designed, gender separated cohorts and their conclusions, with emphasis on male patients and the possible role played by testosterone. © 2023 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
