Resumen:

Lake Alchichica, from here on Alchichica lagoon, located on the border of Puebla and Veracruz?s states in Mexico, stands out like a mirror of blue-green hues in a completely wild and arid environment. Numerous fantastic stories revolve around this waterbody, which are part of the cultural heritage of the region?s peoples. Two residents, Doña Marta Hernández López and Don Eliseo Ventura López (known as ?Licho? ?), who are intimately close to the lagoon, relate their experiences that are compiled in this chapter. Both recall the culinary and artisanal fishing traditions linked to the small endemic silverside fish inhabiting the lagoon (?charal de Alchichica?). Licho recounts a moment in his childhood in which mischievous goblins chased him on the surrounding of the lagoon and recalls stories about a silver-haired mermaid who made men fall in love with her song. Licho also describes the strange and singular phenomenon of the ?charms? associated with the Alchichica lagoon. Doña Marta and Don Licho tell different stories about extraterrestrial spacecraft (UFO) that mysteriously enter and leave the lagoon. Doña Marta affirms that she was the first person to live on the slopes of the lagoon, and she is the one who knows her best. She points out that some local people say they have seen a shy and giant axolotl that usually goes out to sunbathe on the lagoon?s shoreline. Doña Marta describes her own experience with the appearance of the legendary and gloomy ?La Llorona? (the weeping woman), wandering near the water mirror. Although Licho and Marta were strongly associated with the Alchichica lagoon for many years, they never knew each other. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.
