Resumen:

Describing the biological diversity of Lake Alchichica is a task that reflects the historical path of ecology and systematics in the last 80 years. We discuss how the perception of the species richness and endemicity levels in each ecosystem depends not only on natural processes but also on human factors. This chapter presents the most comprehensive systematic list of Lake Alchichica published thus far. Two hundred forty-one taxa belong to the three domains of life: 8 Archaea, 45 Bacteria, and 196 Eukarya. Remarkably, 18 of them have been recognized as endemic species. As more unique, endemic eukaryotic and especially prokaryotic taxa are found, species richness and endemicity indicators will surely change in the future. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.
