Resumen:

The variability of meteorological parameters in Lake Alchichica and the dynamic response of this deep volcanic lake to the thermal regime and mountain breeze is discussed herein. Current patterns from a numerical hydrodynamic model based on wind data from a meteorological station on the eastern shore of the lake were very similar to those collected from an in-situ ADCP current meter, showing that the mountain breeze creates daily lake-level changes up to 11 cm and produces seiches with periods of 2.7 and 2.1 minutes with amplitudes of 7 mm and 4 mm, respectively. CTD-19 profiles showed that the north wind caused periodic shoaling of the thermocline during the day, which served as the primary mechanism for generating internal waves in Lake Alchichica. New bathymetric measurements and volumetric calculations are presented and differed significantly from previous values. Analyses of temperature fluctuations caused by wind-forced internal waves in the lake along with ADCP data showed two diurnal and two semidiurnal inclined internal waves which propagate towards each other with vertical mode variability dependent on lake depth. The simultaneous existence of horizontal and vertical modes corresponds to a volumetric mode or resonant lake oscillation. The internal waves collapse near the shore and the bottom, inducing baroclinic circulation and local mixing, potentially crucial for many biological scalars. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.
