Resumen:

Mexico displays a wide variety of climates, from arid to tropical and humid. Extensive orographic features (Sierra Madre Oriental, Sierra Madre Occidental, Trans-Mexican volcanic belt) and bordered by two oceans (Atlantic and Pacific) make the region susceptible to fluctuations in the global atmospheric circulation. Lake Alchichica is in Serdán-Oriental, the easternmost basin of the Central Mexican Plateau. The Sierra Madre Oriental boards the lake to the east, which produces an orographic rain shadow. The ample altitudinal range and the orographic rain shadow zone?s proximity result in a gradient of climate subtypes from temperate sub-humid to temperate semi-arid and arid. Lake Alchichica is within the temperate semi-arid zone. The rainy season in the basin occurs from May to October with a slight decrease in July and August, while the dry season extends from November to April. The temperature reaches its highest value in June, then slightly decreases until September, decreasing rapidly until December and January, considered the coldest months. Annual temperature records for two weather stations show significant and contrasting trends: -0.02 °C year-1 (1945-2013) in the temperate sub-humid western zone and 0.02 °C year-1 (1966-2016) in the semi-arid eastern zone.
