Resumen:

In this chapter, we describe the interactional characteristics, predisposing factors, manifestations and short- and long-term effects of neglect, chronic antipathy and emotional abuse and hostile treatment by caregivers. We discuss the effects on the infant, older child and adolescent. Neglect is often overlooked when it does not lead to severe maltreatment or lack of medical care for the child. A pattern of neglect however can lead to the experience of being ignored, not ?seen? and ?heard? by caregivers and have profound negative impact on the sense of self, self-esteem, and capacity to assume a parental role later on in life. Constant criticism and parental hostility and authoritarian parenting can lead to a feeling of self-denial and total submission to that regime, or its opposite, fighting and identification with the aggressor on the part of the child. We discuss early detection strategies and approaches to intervention with children and families. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.
