Resumen:

Traditionally the study of soil has been handled by the natural and applied sciences, and those closely linked to food production or to forestry. Yet new disciplines and sectors of society are increasingly looking towards the soil with the emergence of new concepts being brought to soil science. This chapter provides an overview on how awareness about the importance of soil for civilization has changed over time and describes briefly some emerging topics of soil-society relations beyond the ones traditionally studied. It aims to introduce briefly the chapters in this section, which describe these relationships in more detail. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
