Resumen:

Siblings are unique life companions who can provide trust, camaraderie, and support in moments of joy and difficulty, constituting one of the most enduring relationships. This chapter digs into the importance of this relationship, explored through three fundamental theoretical approaches: psychoanalytic, psychosocial, and systemic. Additionally, various factors influencing the sibling relationship, such as culture, socialization, birth order, age, gender, and life stage, are analyzed. Intending to investigate sibling relationships in the Mexican population, the chapter validates an instrument for assessing sibling attachment styles and evaluates significant differences. This is done to gain a better understanding of the factors influencing this dynamic and its impact on individual development. The findings presented in this chapter highlight that within the context of relationships among Mexican siblings, factors such as age difference or the number of siblings do not seem to have a significant impact on the development and maintenance of attachment style. Instead, the most influential factor turns out to be the gender of the individuals involved and that of their siblings. This is because gender socialization in Mexican culture can lead to notable differences in expectations, roles, and behaviors of siblings of different genders, which in turn can complicate these relationships. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
