Resumen:

This work investigated the possibility of increasing the sensitivity of a fiber optic refractometric sensor with an external hemispherical optical detection element, aimed to be used for measuring the level of liquid helium in various reservoirs. This application requires high sensitivity of the sensor to small changes in the refractive index close to unity, since the refractive index of gaseous and liquid helium differs by only 2.6%. Analysis and optimization of sensor parameters were carried out using numerical simulations based on the ray-tracing method. The achieved sensitivity of 7.5 dB to a change from the air to liquid helium of 7.5 dB is sufficient for a reliable measurement of liquid helium level in tanks and reservoirs. © 2024 IEEE.
