Resumen:

Case?control studies follow a classic design that separates older adults with a particular disease or outcome into cases and controls (those without the condition). In fact, when researching diseases with extremely lowincidence in older adults, the case?control study is the best option and, in certain cases, the only one available. It then establishes whether the individualswere exposed to one or more factors to determine the relationship between these factors and the disease retrospectively?that is, from the cause to the effect. When it comes to studies involving older adults, case? control studies offer a more affordable and accurate way to determine the strength of the association of a hypothetical cause-and-effect relationship. The recent direct relationship between case?control studies and cohort studies has allowed researchers to design new patterns for their development while reaping significant benefits. This kind of research allows for the investigation of a wide variety of connected exposures to disease. They also have the significant benefit of being less expensive and requiring smaller sample sizes than cohort studies or experimental designs. Among its numerous drawbacks, this type of study is limited to providing information on the event or target illness within the selected population. © 2024 The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
