Resumen:

Nowadays, water treatment is an important and common procedure carried out in several industries, such as the clothing and food industries, as a government requirement. The necessity to remove dyes, heavy metals, and other pollutants has allowed the reusability of water in some countries. There exist several techniques to achieve this goal; however, an important issue with many of them is that they eventually become useless through continuous use due to the low stability of the materials. The development of new technologies based on low-cost or renewable raw materials (i.e., from natural sources) has allowed the chemical control of the properties of this technology. For this goal, the use of membranes for wastewater treatment is important because they can be employed at different stages in the process. Polymeric membranes (natural or synthetic) offer good usability in all these processes, and they are highly used for different techniques such as nanofiltration, flocculation/coagulation, or reverse osmosis. Naturally, because of their compositions, some problems arise when employing them, and for these membranes, the main concern is the accumulation of salts and films onto their surfaces because this makes their long-term usability difficult. Different microorganisms can attach to membranes, and other organic or inorganic compounds, which depend directly on the physical properties of the membrane, or the chemical composition. Fortunately, this research field is constantly evolving, and several approaches have been thought out to innovate the new membranes to increase their usage time, awarding them with additional chemical properties and, most importantly, with antifouling behavior. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd.
