Resumen:

This paper focuses on an applicative construction in Colombian Andean Spanish, specifically the variant spoken in Ipiales-Narino, a city in southwestern Colombia. The structure is an applicative periphrastic construction (APC), i.e., it is a bi-verbal structure where one of the verbs is the main semantic predicate and the other one, DAR 'give', functions as an applicative marker. The APC has several non-canonical features: first, it is mostly specialized in the introduction of a deputative-beneficiary applied phrase, which although coded as an object, does not increase the (semantic) valence of the root. Second, the applied phrase can also be a prepositional phrase (PP); in this case, the AP does not bear the role of deputative, but that of recipient-beneficiary or possessor. Third, the presence of the applicative DAR, besides allowing the introduction of the AP, entails a particular semantic feature in the clause agent: its referent must be involved in the denoted event in an unexpected fashion, as a special favor to the deputative-beneficiary introduced by the AP, to the speaker, or to someone else. This type of semantic effect has not been described for applicative morphology in other languages.
