Resumen:

For a long time, a person with an intellectual disability (ID) was ignored as a human being. Their interests, aspirations and needs were not contemplated as a priority. Fortunately, in many societies this inappropriate and deep-rooted vision seems to be changing. New efforts coming from parents, teachers and carriers to promote the human rights of this population have had a direct effect on improving the quality of their lives. For example, nowadays a more open attitude can be identified. ID individuals may be included in regular school and work.Their right to exercise a sexual life is considered. In this chapter, we argue that comprehending the cognitive nature of parents and caregivers' beliefs, attitudes and judgments toward persons with ID, will provide significant life improvements in this population. Specifically, the Information Integration Theory (IIT) research approach will be introduced. It allows scientific scrutiny about how contextual and human factors of a society are integrated into systematic thinking (cognitive algebra). We discuss how the IIT approach can be used whenever improvement of life conditions of people with ID is considered. Emerging research studies in this direction are discussed next. © 2013 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
