Resumen:

This study explored the cognitive mechanism underlying caregiver stress in 65 psychology students when they faced caring tasks for people with physical or intellectual disabilities. The authors designed an experiment based on the cognitive algebra paradigm. Four factors were orthogonally combined (disability type, disability severity, behavior, and emotional regulation of person with disability) to create 36 experimental scenarios related to situations regarding the care of people with some disability. The task of students was to read the scenarios and judge their stress levels in each described situation. The results indicated three cognitive response patterns to select, valuate and integrate the factors that underlie their stress level when they face caregiver tasks. The first group presented the highest stress scores and selected only one of the four manipulated factors (severity of disability) as the central piece of information to make their judgments. This result indicates that these participants did not present a systematic way of thinking under care situations. The second one was characterized by a medium level of stress and the selection of two factors (behavior and disability severity) as the primary stress elicitors. They used a summative rule for their information integration. The third cognitive pattern comprised the lowest stress scores group and the systematic integration of three factors (behavior, severity of disability, and emotional regulation) through a summative rule. The theoretical, methodological, and applied implications of these results are discussed in the present work. © 2021 IEEE.
